Officially the ‘Kiwifruit Capital of the World’, Te Puke is a thriving rural town with a population of around 7,500 people, and a strong heritage in agriculture.

There are many exciting things to explore in the area with nearby attractions including Mount Maunganui, Papamoa Beach, Redwoods Forest bike tracks, Te Puke Golf Club, and Bayfair shopping mall. The commute to Tauranga CBD takes 25 minutes and a trip to Rotorua takes less than an hour (times may vary depending on traffic).

From scenic bush walks to parks and playgrounds, there are a number of outdoor activities to enjoy within Te Puke. The quirky ‘Looking Glass Garden’ is a hidden wonder that fascinates children and adults alike. For those seeking social activities, there are local clubs for bowls, tennis, golf, boxing, and more. Adrenaline junkies can head to the local skatepark, or to Redwoods Forest in Rotorua to test out the world-class bike tracks. There’s also 260km of pristine beaches and coastline to choose from including Papamoa, Mount Maunganui, Pukehina, and Maketu.

Whether you’re in retirement or juggling a young family, Te Puke has something for everyone.

Foodies will be delighted at the selection of eating options in Te Puke, including award-winning cafe, ‘The Daily’. Other relaxed options include a number of takeaways, cafes, and Anann Pineapple Pub which serves craft beer and pizza. Just down the road, Papamoa hosts some of Tauranga’s top pubs and restaurants including the Excelsa Centre, and the East Quarter which is under development. Maketu is a popular destination for enjoying fish and chips while watching the waves roll in.

For a bit of retail therapy, head down the main street to enjoy browsing through the boutique shops or head to any one of the local DIY stores for all your home and garden essentials. Te Puke Community Markets run every third Saturday of the Month on Commerce Lane.

Destinations less than an hour from Te Puke…

1. Papamoa

14 minutes by car (12km) 

Papamoa is famous for its white sandy beaches – perfect for swimming, surfing, and fishing. It also has great shopping and a range of bars, cafes, and restaurants. The Papamoa Plaza and Fashion Island shopping hub is just 2 minutes from the beach. Papamoa Hills offers a popular walking track.

2. Mount Maunganui

Crowned New Zealand’s best beach, the Mount is legendary for a reason! The perfect place to kick back, surf or swim, the Mount also boasts world class boutique shopping, a fantastic array of places to eat and drink and a multitude of fun outdoor activities.

3. Bayfair Shopping Centre

15 minutes by car (17km)

With over 130 stores and restaurants, Bayfair is one of New Zealand’s largest undercover shopping destinations.

4. Tauranga CBD

25 minutes by car (25km)

Situated at the edge of the ‘Golden Triangle’, Tauranga is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing cities – and most popular. Tauranga offers an array of art and cultural attractions, shopping, eating, and dining experiences, study and commerce – it has something for everyone. 

5. Rotorua

50 minutes (56km)

Rotorua is known for its geothermal landscapes, sparkling lakes, and beautiful forests. It is a mecca for the outdoor adventurer and home to many popular tourist attractions such as the Polynesian Spa and Pools, The Luge, Canopy Zip Lining and Rainbow Springs Nature Park.  

6. The Redwoods

The Redwoods is renowned among mountain bikers as a world-class riding destination, featuring master crafted trails, varying topography, and fantastic scenery. With over 150km of continually evolving trails, there is something for every level of rider.

7. Te Puke Golf Club

Golfers will delight in the Te Puke Golf Course, a welcoming club with some of the best greens and fairways around.

8. Baywave

15 minutes by car (17km)

Baywave is one of the Bay of Plenty’s top attractions with New Zealand’s largest wave pool, a range of swimming programmes, a hydro-slide, gym, and a different pool to suit everyone. It’s a great place to take the kids.

9. Okere Falls Store and White-Water Rafting

30 minutes by car (38km)

The Okere Falls Store is a local gem and New Zealand’s best eco-friendly café, looking over beautiful lake Rotoiti right where the Kaituna River White Water rafting begins.

10. Whakatāne

55 minutes by car (68km)

Whakatāne is the sunniest town in New Zealand and a delightful coastal town, rich in culture and with exceptional boutique shopping… and amazing fishing! Also, home to “The Hub”, a large retail shopping centre with all the big names such as Harvey Norman, Farmers, and Rebel Sport.
